Summer Box Office

The summer box office is off to a good start so far with Spiderman 3, Shrek the Third, and Pirates 3 all jam-packed into May alone. Those movies are making some good money, no doubt, but their quality is definitely lacking. Spiderman 3 disappointed many Spidey fans, including myself, but did meet the summer blockbuster quota. Shrek the Third had me laughing for long periods of time but didn’t have the same punch Shrek 2 had, which had me on the floor crying. Pirates…let’s just say I’m not looking forward to watching it after Dead Man’s Chest (which was about an hour too long. What sucks is that I’m never getting that hour back). A lot of my friends recently saw At World’s End and came out with a “meh” expression on their face.

Luckily they’re three months left in the “summer” box office. Here’s what I’m really looking forward to. Continue reading ‘Summer Box Office’

So that’s how they kept Starcraft 2 on the down low…

John Rambo is out for blood. Again.

In case you missed it, the first Rambo 4 trailer was shown a week or so ago. And it’s not for the light at heart.

All I can say is that that’s the first time I’ve seen someone’s throat get ripped out in a theatrical trailer. I would be appauled by it under normal circumstances, but then again, THIS IS JOHN EFFIN’ RAMBO!!! What do you expect?!! That’s probably the LEAST he can do!

I can’t wait. What I like about the trailer is that it gives off that same old school Rambo-First Blood 2 feel from back in the 80’s.

Oh, and yes, he did just blast some fool away with a turret at point blank.

GET SOME!

Nintendo Media Summit: Metroid Prime 3 Screens

Similar to Sony’s recent Gamer’s Day, there’s a media summit being held by Nintendo this week in Washington (the state) to get all game journalists up to speed with their 2007 lineup. Why all the individuals events? Well, if you do remember, E3 used to he held annually during this week before its plug was pulled.

There hasn’t been any big news from Camp Nintendo yet but we’re being told to expect some hands/eyes-on impressions from the journalists we love in the forthcoming days. Hopefully I’ll be hearing some news on the Smash Bros. Brawl roster, which is probably my most wanted game at the moment.

For now, here are some recently released Metroid Prime 3 screens (coming out August 20th), via Kotaku. Looks good. No online/multiplayer mode has been announced. Good or bad? It would be sweet if there was online co-op.

*sigh*

Only if.

Robots in Disguise!

I saw this at the cinema on the opening day of Shrek the Third.

Wow. This movie might not end up being that bad. Imagine how I felt seeing this on a giant screen. It would suck if the movie eventually did suck after this trailer hyped the crap out of me. I’m a sucker for good trailers, though. Throw in some explosions, swooping camera angles, slow motion effects, and a few robots in disguise, and I’m SOLD.

Enjoy.

Wait, can Shia LeBoeuf really act? From the looks of this, maybe he can. I never noticed.

Awww, July 4th?!! Damn it. That’s seems like years away.

Best. Intro. Ever.

The intro (especially the theme song) for Metal Gear Solid 2: SOL induces a few feelings inside of me; three feelings to be exact. The first being that it makes me want to go fight and then die for my country…preferably while dual-wielding pistols or some crazy bad-ass sh*t. The second is that it makes want to run outside and do a backflip. Just a backflip, nothing else. The third is too embarrassing to reveal. In short, this is my favorite intro video of all time. If you think otherwise, show me a better one, and then I’ll slap you in the face for insulting me.

But honestly, find a specific intro that sticks out in your memory and post a YouTube link in a comment.

If my country DOES happen to go to war, I better not hear that song playing.

April Hardware Sales

via Kotaku

Last month’s console hardware sales were recently released by NPD, showing that Nintendo is still dominating on this side of the Pacific as well. Nothing can stop the monster that is the Nintendo DS (its been sold out for almost two years in Japan). Once again, PS3’s are moving slow. Real slow. Metal Gear Solid 4 better come out sooner rather than later (hopefully this fall). Microsoft is hanging in there.

Here are the numbers:

  • Nintendo DS – 471K
  • Wii – 360K
  • PlayStation 2 – 194K
  • PlayStation Portable – 183K
  • Xbox 360 – 174K
  • Game Boy Advance – 84K
  • PLAYSTATION 3 – 82K
  • GameCube – 13K

Software numbers:

01. Pokemon Diamond (DS) – 1.045M
02. Pokemon Pearl (DS) – 712K
03. Super Paper Mario (Wii) – 352K
04. Wii Play (Wii) – 249K
05. Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360) – 197K
06. Guitar Hero II (PS2) – 142K
07. Spider-Man 3 (Xbox 360) – 117K
08. Spider-Man 3 (PS2) – 105K
09. God of War II (PS2) – 101K
10. MLB ‘07: The Show (PS2) – 79K

According to vgchartz.com, the Wii has sold approximately 7 million units worldwides and has shortened the gap between itself and the 360 to roughly 3 million units. Let’s not forget that Microsoft had a year’s head-start. The only game (in the near future) that I see keeping the Wii from steamrolling the competition is Halo 3. I’m not sure if anything else is capable of putting up a fight since Nintendo is planning on pleasing it’s hardcore fans with a three-course meal of Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy. All are expected to be released this fall, but I’m sure one will get delayed. I’ll do just fine with 2 out of the 3! Anyone would.

I saw my first Wii’s out in the wild last weekend; 3 of them were sitting on a shelf at Wal Mart. Seems like they’re finally starting to become readily available, but let’s not speak too soon. I guess Nintendo really is ramping up production as they had promised. Good job guys.

That animation at the top will never get old.

Chu is Now Playing: Halo 3 Beta

I was never really into the Halo franchise, which is unlike almost every other college student in this US. Nothing about it had me sold like Perfect Dark 64 did (I remember playing that game for a week straight, literally) back in the day, which is probably my favorite console FPS of all time. Maybe it’s because I despised the Xbox controller and regularly fumbled with its awkward (in my opinion) control scheme. Or maybe I just ran into too many plasma sword wielding douchebags online. Long story short: I sucked at Halo. But after getting a little hands-on time with the Halo 3 Beta, things are starting to get better between Master Chief and I.

Before I get into detail about my playtest, I’d like to mention how much I hate Microsoft for its dubious, yet highly unavoidable, Halo 3 marketing campaign. You officially got me sucked into the hype machine. You bastards. Damn, this game is gonna sell.
